Dental Bridges Overview
Dental bridges are a form of cosmetic dentistry that help to take the place of missing teeth. A dental bridge consists of a replacement tooth that is bordered by two crowns, which are affixed to existing teeth or dental implants to hold the dental bridge in place.
Candidates for Dental Bridges
Just about anyone that has a missing tooth, or even a few missing teeth, will make a good candidate for treatment with a dental bridge. There are a few exceptions however, that may make a person with missing teeth a poor candidate for receiving a dental bridge. A person with advanced gum disease and tooth decay, for example, may not be a good candidate for dental bridges.
Generally, a candidate for a dental bridge needs to be in overall good health and have healthy teeth and gums in order for this cosmetic dentistry procedure to be successful. Cases where there is existing gum disease and tooth decay can not only make it difficult for the dental bridge to be successfully put into place, but it can also affect how long the dental bridge will last.
Caring for Your Dental Bridge
Patients who receive dental bridges must be willing to practice good hygiene after the dental bridge has been put into place, as special care will need to be maintained in order to keep the teeth which support the bridge healthy. While good hygiene is of course recommended and important for all people, it is absolutely essential for those with a dental bridge to ensure that food particles do not get trapped under the bridge, which can result in gum decay, tooth decay, and infection in the mouth.
If you have a missing tooth, or teeth, you should speak with a dentist about the possibility of a dental bridge. They will be able to evaluate your particular case and determine whether or not you are a good candidate for this treatment option.
