A Good Candidate for Dental Implants

Who should get dental implants? Someone who has lost teeth due to decay, gum disease, the failure of a root canal procedure, trauma or injury, or even excessive wear and tear should consider implants.

Why? The functionality of the mouth is altered whenever a single tooth is lost. When someone has lost many teeth, they are going to experience things like shifting of the remaining teeth (which can cause biting problems and disorders), weakening of the jaw and facial muscles, and even a resistance to smile or speak due to self-consciousness about the missing teeth. Additionally, when someone’s jaws and teeth are not functioning in a natural way they may begin avoiding certain foods, and this can lead to serious health problems.

Of course, not all people with missing teeth will be the ideal candidates for dental implants. For one thing, people who are heavy smokers and who refuse to give up their habit tend to experience high failure rates with implants. Additionally, someone who is in ill-health may not be able to use implants as well.

It is going to require a consultation with an oral surgeon and a cosmetic dentist to ensure that someone is the right candidate for the work. Most patients will be approved for the process, and it takes two separate steps to complete. The first is the insertion of the prosthetic component that connects to the jaw and the surrounding soft tissue. After a few month’s time the next and final part is the connection of a crown to the top of the implant. If the patient also has a need for a bridge or dentures, the dental implants are found to be a superior anchor over natural teeth as well.

Cosmetic dentists will usually recommend implants for those with many missing teeth who are also desirous of an effective and healthy smile makeover too.
